About Us

Captain Ronnie Black earned his sea legs working for his father (also Captain Black) fishing the Atlantic waters off the coast of south Florida in the 1960s and ‘70s. He brought his commercial fishing trade to the Gulf coast and was doing well, catching, packing and selling local species caught in the gulf and local bays.

Then in the ‘90s a “net ban” law was instituted which summarily ended his family business. But Captain Black is a very resourceful man. During his many years of fishing he not only learned how to rig a boat but also weld and custom fabricate any device needed. From hydraulic hoists to specialized fish separators that sorted the catch according to size. He subsequently parlayed this “I can fix or make anything” attitude into a successful marine construction business which focuses on seawalls and custom docks.

Captain Ronnie Black is the rare breed of American men that can make anything and loves the challenge of a project that seems almost impossible to accomplish.

Joseph Pool is a registered residential contractor in Escambia and Santa Rosa County. He obtained dual degrees in Animal Husbandry and Building Construction from the University of Florida. Go Gators!

Joe originally obtained his contractor licensing in the mid ’90s while he was a high school teacher. During that time he focused on renovations and additions during the summers.

Joe changed careers after 10 years of teaching but kept his hand in various construction projects while spending 20 years in medical sales.

COVID changed things in 2020 and Joe pursued construction full time by focusing on marine construction through a partnership with Captain Ronnie Black who he had known for 25 years. Joe focuses on design, cost estimating, and permitting of Captain Black’s Marine Construction projects.

Joe’s residential business which compromises custom homes and additions is Front Porch Builders LLC.
